Pro-model Louisville Slugger dated to 1922, as used by Boston Braves catcher and first baseman Hank Gowdy. Gowdy, who batted .317 in 1922, swung an extraordinarily heavy club - 40.2 ounces, measuring 35 inches in length. Gowdy's bat is a model J13, originally designed for Shoeless Joe Jackson. The J13 bat had an extra wide handle, and according to John Taube at PSA/DNA, Gowdy was the only other player to use this model besides Jackson. The bat contains evidence of side writing on the right barrel, an indication that it was likely returned by Gowdy to Louisville Slugger for reference so that the company could use that bat as a guide for future orders.  As such, side-writing is considered impeccable provenance for game use.  Despite this, PSA/DNA has assigned a grade of GU 7, indicating the bat has identifiable player characteristics and exhibits light to medium use. A handle crack reduces the technical grade, as does some grain swelling from repeated ball contact.  Full LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA.
