The N338-1 S.F. Hess California League cards are among the hobby's greatest 19th Century rarities, extremely difficult to obtain in any grade. The cards are so rare that just a handful of examples are known to exist, and feature players from the California State League (a precursor to the Pacific Coast League). Just 20 subjects are known (including two poses of Levy), with SGC having graded just 11 examples from the set and PSA just three. They are incredibly rare.

This example, which features San Francisco Pioneers pitcher James Noonan (whose last name was actually spelled "Nunan"), has been graded VG+ 3.5 by SGC. A stunning example with incredible photographic clarity, the example is largely clean, with some moderate staining in the border area along the top of the card, largely irrelevant given the beauty of the image and rarity of the issue. An extremely pleasing example, among the most rare and desirable of 19th Century card types, the most difficult to obtain of the different baseball issues published by S.F. Hess.
