1960 World Series walk-off hero Bill Mazeroski shows the kind of intensity you want from an anchor of the infield. It's also possible that Maz wore that helmet at the plate and second base. Pittsburgh's front office directed 1950s fielders to wear "safety helmets" that appear on many Topps cards of that era. While it spurred lockerroom resistance at the time, added protection also reflected our pastime's slow march toward improved on-field safety. The PSA NM-MT 8 grade reflects fuzz on one corner and centering a bit to the south. The population report shows just 16 cards higher.
