Mays who passed away in 1971 is well known as the pitcher who beaned Indians shortstop Ray Chapman the only death directly resulting from an injury received at a major league game. It was this incident that caused the league to rewrite the rules of the game requiring umpires to replace dirty baseballs and eventually outlawing the spitball.
