Large, distinctive image of The Iron Horse at his mid-game fielding position, printed for distribution with cases of Butterfinger candy bars. Their paper-thin construction left them vulnerable to chipping and tears, to say nothing of the potential damage when young fans pinned or glued them up for display. It says something special that a beloved Hall of Fame player like Gehrig survived to our modern hobby in any condition, as fewer than 100 total Gehrigs appear on the PSA population report. Its PR 1 grade reflects a modest number of border touches, with some back residue and creasing. His central image displays much stronger than many of this grade.
For all his amazing production, contemporaries relate how baseball came to Gehrig with great difficulty and he worked hard at anything he felt lacking, including the skills needed at an active position like first base. This image communicates his focus and determination in the face of that challenge better than a graceful batting pose might convey, as well as his detailed surroundings, from infield to ad-laden outfield wall.
