Future Hall of Fame shortstop Dave Bancroft first played against top professional competition with three years on the West Coast, where its stars often launched major league careers. His contribution to Portland's 1914 PCL championship club brought Dave a contract with the Phillies, a 1915 National League pennant in his rookie season, and paved the way for his eventual Cooperstown induction.
