Bill McLanahan was known as the first well-known sports cartoonist in the South. His first sports cartoon ran in 1946, and he continued working until 1973, also drawing editorial cartoons later in his career. An award-winning artist, he was also a well-known figure in the model railroading hobby.
Presented here is a fantastic original work featuring cartoon images of a photographer taking a picture of a posing player. Measuring 11 3/4" x 12", the piece has been illustrated in pen and ink, and inked with marker and possibly watercolor. Given the nature of this catalog and its focus on sports art and photography, this illustration was emblematic of this auction enough that we considered it for the cover, a wonderful piece that presents well despite being in technically FAIR condition with some heavy creasing and a hanging chad at the lower-left corner.
