Following the Yankees' loss to the Dodgers in the 1981 World Series owner George Steinbrenner vowed big changes in New York and he made them adding speed to the lineup in the form of outfielders Dave Collins and Ken Griffey. The Bronx Bombers became the "Bronx Burners" under re-hired manager Bob Lemon finishing the season with a 79-83 record good for fifth place in the AL East. The experiment lasted one year with the 1983 team adding power hitters Steve Kemp and Don Baylor and bringing up a young outfielder/first baseman named Don Mattingly. Presented here is a baseball signed by 9 Yankees from that period ostensibly during that period. Signatures include an early example of Mattingly outfielder Omar Moreno Roy White (sweet spot) reserve outfielder Brian Dayett shortstop Roy Smalley outfielder Bobby Murcer Catfish Hunter (HOF) and two signatures that neither we nor SGC were able to identify. Hunter was obviously retired by 1983 his signature may have been applied to the ball later or perhaps he was serving as a coach or simply present when the ball was signed. Despite this the presence of the early Mattingly Hall of Famer Hunter and Yankee hero Bobby Murcer make this a desirable ball. The ball which has been tucked away in the collection of a woman who has been a long-time collector of Yankees memorabilia and autographs remains in outstanding condition with each of the signatures dark and clear. An excellent memento of a transitional time in Yankees history.
