Signed in 1992 by the Seattle Mariners, David Ortiz was initially named by the club as "David Arias," using his mother's last name in error. After being traded to the Minnesota Twins, he advised the team that he preferred to be called David Ortiz, taking his father's last name as was more customary. Here, on this 1996 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers card issued by Best, he was still called "Arias," just a season before his name would change, but years before he would become Big Papi, the great Boston DH and Hall of Famer. Graded NM-MT+ 8.5 by Beckett, the card received a sub grade of 8 for centering, but 9.5 for corners, 9 for surface, and 9.5 for edges.
