Solly Hofman played multiple positions in his 14-season major league career spent mostly with the Chicago Cubs with whom he is depicted on his Turkey Red cabinet. In the great story of Fred Merkle's "boner" in the 1908 season Hofman was the player who fielded Al Bridwell's single and threw it to Johnny Evers for the out. Known for his ability to play every position on the field he broke in at center field because the Cubs infielders were worried about losing their positions to him and asked manager Frank Chance to try him out in center.
