The 1963 Asheville Tourists were a fairly nondescript team playing in the South Atlantic League and finishing the season with a 79-61 record. The team featured a handful of players who would go on to the majors but nobody of great consequence - outfielder Ron Woods would go on to a six-year career with a variety of teams as would infielder Roberto Pena. Pitcher Bob Lee would play five major league seasons as a reliever with three different teams and catcher Jerry May would play ten years with Pittsburgh Kansas City and 8 at bats with the World Champion 1973 Mets. However Hall of Famer George Sisler a roving hitting coach for the Pirates in the early 1960s had occasion to visit with the Tourists and work with their young players. Presented is a team-signed baseball from the 1963 Tourists featuring Hall of Famer George Sisler. Sisler who left the sweet spot for team manager Ray Hathaway signed opposite the sweet spot over the South Atlantic League stamp. The ball which is somewhat toned and does have some fading in the less important signatures still presents very well the Sisler signature easy to read despite being placed on top of the stampings. Full LOA from JSA.
