The E95 and E96 Philadelphia Caramel series of 1913 boasted a number of cards which had their designs appear on the covers of childrens" notebooks. Some youngsters took the liberty of cutting the notebook covers up and creating "cards" out of the cover designs. For years the specific origin of these cards eluded collectors with many believing that the cards were proofs from the E95 and E96 sets. Eventually collectors discovered the notebook cover which led to the discovery of the cards" true origin. Part of the reason for the time it took to make this discovery was the scarcity of both the cards and the notebook covers. Produced on thin paper they"re just not readily available - their intended purpose was to serve as notebook covers which are generally used written on torn up and eventually discarded. They are highly susceptible to wear and a variety of condition issues and there simply aren"t that many out there. Indeed while 19 or 20 cards have been catalogued nobody really knows how many covers were issued or how many cards may be available.Presented here is a grouping of approximately half the known cards from the set. All graded AUTHENTIC by SGC due to being hand-cut the cards present with a variety of condition issues; some appear clean and in exceptional grade and others are "beaters." That these cards exist in one place is astounding given their scarcity. A listing of the cards included in the collection along with their approximate condition is as follows:Red Ames (Poor); Chief Bender (HOF Poor); Mordecai Brown (HOF Good - Ex appearance but a small corner clip); Art DevlinVG/EX; Bill Donovan (VG/EX) Ed Konetchy (G EX appearance but a slight tear); Harry Krause (F); Chief Meyers (G); John Pfeister (G); Joe Tinker (HOF - Poor).A wonderful grouping of very scarce cards.
