in the years around 1919 these oversized (4 3/8” x 6 3/8”) photographic
premiums were produced by Chicago-area printer Felix Mendelsohn and
sold in advertisements in The Sporting News as 100-card sets for $5.
Since the issue was produced over a number of years more than 100
subjects are known and several had their team affiliations change as
they were traded during the set’s production run. Today the cards are
reasonably scarce; it is uncommon to find any cards from the issue at
auction.
Outstanding image of Hall of Famer Sam Rice in another example of "buy the card, not the grade." While there are four tiny pinholes - one in each corner - the corners and edges are far nicer than the grade would suggest. The reverse does have some soiling, some light paper loss, and residue hinting at a previous life in a scrapbook or photo album, but none of those issues affect the front, which is gorgeous and light. There is some light soiling on the front, but the details of the image are visible and beautiful, with the text along the bottom border clear and legible.
SGC has only ever graded 7 total examples of this M101-6, with only five receiving a higher grade than the Poor 1 offered here of Hall of Famer Sam Rice.
