Spectacular first day cover celebrating the 100th Anniversary of
baseball. This historic piece was postmarked June 12 of
1939 in Cooperstown, New York, which was the very first day of
operation for
the newly-christened National Baseball Hall of Fame and nearby Doubleday
Field.
As if that isn't already amazing enough, this example has been signed in black ink by Hall of Famer Zack D. Wheat, who added the inscription "1907-1928" which is close but not quite the actual dates of his playing career. Wheat was born in 1888 and made his MLB debut on September 11, 1909, and played his final game on September 21, 1927. Nevertheless, a special piece with a tougher autograph, as Wheat passed away in March of 1972.
Authenticated by PSA/DNA, this is a tremendous piece.
