The 1922 Wm. Paterson card set consists of 50 cards measuring 2”
by 3-1/4”. This obscure issue from Canadian candy maker William
Paterson features numerous Hall of Famers and stars from baseball's
early years. These black-and-white or sepia-toned cards present each
player centered with his full name and team as well as the “Wm.
Paterson, Limited – Brantford, Canada” advertisement printed at the
bottom of each. The blank-backed set also provided a printed card number
adjacent-left to the players name and team.
The 50-card set is riddled
with Hall of Fame talent, including Chicago White Sox catcher Ray Schalk, who is the subject of the example offered here. Centering is just slightly west on the canvas, with light soiling along the left edge and light surface abrasions adding character to the image of the hard-nosed field general. Edges are nicer than the grade, as are three of the corners, though the top left has some light creasing. The reverse has some heavier soiling on the right edge which does line up with the most prominent spot on the front, keeping this card from grading higher than it already has.
PSA has only ever graded 2 total examples of this 1922 V89 Wm. Paterson card, with only ONE receiving a higher grade than the Good 2 offered here of Hall of Famer Ray Schalk.
