James Alexander "Jim" Tyng played one game for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1888, collecting a 4-inning save while surrendering 8 hits. His only other Major League experience came in 1879, when he pitched 3 games - all of them complete games - for Boston's National League team. The fact that Jim Tyng has a card in this set commemorating his time with the Phillies is nothing short of miraculous. The first major league player selected from Harvard (where he is credited for inventing the catcher's mask when he was a catcher there), Tyng actually has four poses in the issue.
While the corners are rounded, the edges are actually nice for the grade. A little chipping and softness on the right side, with some paper loss in the bottom left corner, but the image itself looks great. Tyng stands triumphantly in his white uniform with a colored tie, leaning on a bat with his right hand as his left hand sits on his hip. The contrast of his dark shoes, his belt, and his thick mustache is wonderful next to the ground, his uniform, and the light studio backdrop.
