Pitting the Detroit Tigers against the Pittsburgh Pirates the 1909 World Series contained the interesting subtext of the game's two greatest hitters - Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner - facing each other for the first time. Many photographs and even some film footage of that series exists it remains one of the more exciting in history. Also featuring two Hall of Fame managers (Fred Clarke and Hughie Jennings) the Pirates ultimately won the Series in seven games. The Wagner vs. Cobb battle however fizzled with Cobb hitting just .231 while Wagner batted .333 with six stolen bases. Presented here is a beautiful three-panel panoramic postcard measuring approximately 14" in length featuring the 25 members of the World Champion Pirates standing shoulder to shoulder. Featuring Hall of Famers Honus Wagner Vic Willis and Fred Clarke the card was manufactured by the RW Johnston Studios of Pittsburgh. The card was addresses and mailed at some point in 1909 (the bulk of the cancellation has been obscured) and subsequently mounted in a scrapbook of some sort. These flaws plus some creasing and staining would give the piece a technical grade of POOR despite the piece's overall attractiveness and display quality. An outstanding memento of one of the game's most storied teams featuring one of the greatest players to ever take the field - Honus Wagner.
