The first series of cards in the T206 set were issued beginning in
1909 in cigarette and loose tobacco packs through 16 different brands
owned by the American Tobacco Company. It is a landmark set in the
history of baseball card collecting due to its size and rarity, with
cards of over 500 major and minor-league players issued in the set
through 1911. It is known informally as the "White Border" set due to
the
distinctive white borders surrounding the quality color lithographs on
each card.
Showing off the skills that found him elected to the Hall-of-Fame,
Willie Keeler is seen here choking up on his bat, with storm clouds
ominously swirling in the cerulean sky behind him in his T206 "with bat"
pose. Centering is just a hair east on the canvas, but is very nice overall. A small surface abrasion to the right of Keeler's eyes helps illuminate some soiling, but the main offender keeping the grade from being higher is a crease starting on Keeler's chest and expanding outward in a couple different directions. The Piedmont back shows some general staining but has bold printing and presents well. Regardless of the grade, this Hall of Fame example has tremendous eye appeal.
