The first series of cards in the T206 set were issued beginning in
1909 in cigarette and loose tobacco packs through 16 different brands
owned by the American Tobacco Company. It is a landmark set in the
history of baseball card collecting due to its size and rarity, with
cards of over 500 major and minor-league players issued in the set
through 1911. It is known informally as the "White Border" set due to
the
distinctive white borders surrounding the quality color lithographs on
each card.
There are
two different Jake Pfiester cards included in the T206 set.
One depicts him throwing a ball. This version features a portrait of the Chicago pitcher seated with a solid orange background. Each card erroneously spells his last name as "Pfeister," unfortunately. Centering is wonderful on this one, with strong corners and edges. Registration is nearly perfect, with only some light soiling near the top left corner and a couple light spots of color loss in the background keeping this card from grading even higher than it already has. The green text on the tough Sovereign back is bold and brilliant, with the canvas itself bright and clean.
SGC has only ever graded 13 total
examples of this T206 with a Sovereign back, with only ONE receiving a
higher grade than the VG-EX 4 offered here of Chicago's "Big Jack" Pfiester seated in the dugout.
