Constructed of well-crafted, polished wood with a glossy lithographic transfer of some sort affixed to the top of this late 1800s child's pencil box, an example of expert craftsmanship, having held up for well over a century. Depicting a variety of baseball players carrying equipment, the lid's image has held up well and retained its color with very little yellowing. Surface abrasions are evident throughout the lid, resulting in some gouges and areas where the image itself has rubbed away from the box, though none of the condition issues distract from the aesthetic appeal of the piece itself. The interior of the piece is in outstanding condition, with three separate compartments for children's writing and school implements.
