Glazed ceramic "ABC" plate, likely dating to the 1860s, featuring a baseball scene. These plates were called "ABC" plates because the design around the edge of the plate is ringed by the alphabet, to help educate young children as they ate. Plates of this nature typically contained a scene that would be found interesting to children, painted at the base of the plate. These plates are scarce and highly desirable. Measuring 6" in diameter, the quality of the image is exceptional and does not appear faded. Some chipping and age-related discoloration at the edges and reverse reduces the technical condition but not the display quality. A wonderful early baseball-related image emblazoned on a functional item aimed at helping educate children while they ate their spinach.
