Following on the heels of the massive T206 set, Coupon cigarettes issued
three subsets of cards using images from the more
well-known White Border set. Coupons did not have the wide distribution enjoyed by
T206, as they were primarily distributed in Louisiana.
Type 2 examples are distinguished by the blue text used for the player
name and team and "20 for Five Cents" reverses. While often overlooked by collectors, these cards are
markedly more scarce and condition-sensitive than their T206
companions, due in large part to the glossy surface of the cards being
susceptible to cracking and wrinkling.
This example features a portrait of Hall of Famer John McGraw wearing a dark cap and his white NY Giants sweater. Centering is just slightly west on the canvas, with corner and edge wear consistent to the grade. While some light soiling is present, the bold colors and strong pose of the manager give this card tremendous eye appeal, with the reverse - both because of its scarcity and its condition - only adding to the draw. The scarcity of this issue far outweighs any cosmetic flaws on this example.
SGC has only ever graded 47 total examples of this T213-2 with a Coupon back, with only nine receiving a higher grade than the Good+ 2.5 offered here of Hall of Famer John McGraw.
