Lynchburg, Virginia has always been at the
heart of the tobacco industry in America, and the Lone Jack Cigarette
Company was one its pioneer firms. The company's brands were Lone Jack,
Ruby, My Sweetheart, and La Hidalquia.
Lone Jack cards are very scare, with this example featuring Verona Jarbeau, who was a comic actress, operatic soprano and vaudeville performer known especially for her roles in comic operas. She was especially known for her performances as Yum-Yum in The Mikado and Hebe in H.M.S. Pinafore, in early American productions of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. When the Chicago White Stockings traveled cross-country in 1888 on the way to their world tour, the team's African-American mascot, Clarence Duval, created a stir by running off to join Jarbeau's touring show.
This is the only example of this 1880s N369 Lone Jack Cigarettes card SGC has ever graded, with
this one receiving a VG-EX 4 grade.
