This extremely scarce 3" x 4.75" trade card has a wonderful illustration of John L. Sullivan seated at a table, smiling while holding cup of tea in one hand and a knife in the other. The text at the bottom reads "In Training I Find Nothing So Fine As A Cup Of Union Pacific Tea Co's Tea. John L. Sullivan". The reverse has text promoting teas, coffees, and baking powder.

Known simply as "John L." among his admirers and dubbed the "Boston Strong Boy" by the press, Sullivan is recognized as the first heavyweight champion of gloved boxing, reigning from February 7, 1882 to September 7, 1892. He is also generally recognized as the last heavyweight champion of bare-knuckle boxing under the London Prize Ring Rules. Sullivan was a cultural icon of late 19th century America, and was arguably the first boxing superstar. He was one of the world's highest-paid athletes of his era.

Corners and edges show some wear, but are in overall wonderful condition. The reverse has the number "50769" written at the bottom right corner in pencil, and appears to have been written over another number or word which had been erased. The upper right corner similarly exhibits some pencil writing which has been erased, causing a bit of paper loss which does poke through a bit to the front. That hole could possibly be the mark of a pinhole, though only that corner displays such an imperfection.

Light soiling and surface wear gives the card a slightly darker tone, though the wonderful illustration and period-appropriate colors still leave this example with tremendous eye appeal. PSA has only ever graded two examples of this card, with one grading a Poor 1 and the other grading a Good 2. Victorian-era trade cards are hot right now, and those featuring celebrities of the day seem to be especially increasing in value.
