Important card from a lesser-known but engaging 18-card set from 1930 known as the W554 issue. The set consists of attractive 5" x 7" sepia toned photos printed on heavier stock with the player's name, position and
team affiliation printed at the bottom of the card. Within the 18 card set, 13 players eventually found their way into the
Hall of Fame. Complete sets are difficult to assemble.
Though they are labeled "Hand Cut" by PSA and SGC, we're not sure that this is the case as each
of the W554 cards we have offered are uniform in size and feature what
appear to be machine cuts. Regardless, this an attractive example featuring Hall of Famer Hack Wilson in a rare throwing pose instead of with a bat. Centering is nearly perfect, with the black text at the bottom border laying exactly right between the image and the edge. The blank back exhibits some toning and has one particularly noticeable spot, though it does not affect the front, which has nice contrast and is a clear, unique image. Tremendous eye appeal on this one.
PSA has only ever graded 6 total examples of this W554, with only three receiving a higher grade than the VG 3 offered here of Hall of Famer Hack Wilson.
