Wonderful 6.5" x 8.5" original news service photo of Philadelphia Athletics manager, Cornleius McGillicuddy - Connie Mack. Mack is holding a small white elephant, which the Athletics adopted as their logo following disparaging comments from fellow Hall of Fame manager John McGraw in 1902, declaring the Athletics a "white elephant" in reference to their financial troubles at the time. Mack famously owned and managed his Athletics for 50 seasons from 1901-50, retiring at the age of 87. During his tenure with the club Mack was responsible for nine American League pennants and five World Series titles (1910, 1911, 1913, 1929, 1930), while accumulating the most wins, losses and games managed in the history of baseball. Photo surface remains in excellent condition with obvious wear around the perimeter in the form of pinholes and a missing top-left corner. Credit stamping from Pacific & Atlantic has been applied to verso where a 1996 Baseball Magazine hologram also appears. Guaranteed Type 1.
