Outstanding 1887 card of Hall of Fame outfielder Tommy McCarthy, pictured here with the Philadelphia Phillies, where he was a part-time player with just 73 plate appearances. The following season, McCarthy would join the St. Louis Browns, where he would excel, launching a Hall of Fame career while helping his team win the 1888 American Association pennant. The card is a stunner, with outstanding clarity and depth of contrast that suggest a considerably higher grade. The grade of FR 1.5 assessed by PSA speaks to scrapbook damage on the reverse, including some paper remnants. The important part of the card, however, boasts an image that is among the more sharp and attractive examples one will find in the issue. Despite the technical grade, an extremely attractive example with a strong quality image, quite desirable among advanced collectors.
