On June 18, 1963, 21-year-old heavyweight Muhammad Ali (then known as Cassius Clay) faced off against 29-year-old South Londoner, Henry Cooper. In the first outdoor fight at Wembley Stadium in 28 years, Ali outweighed Cooper by 20 pounds and sported a four and a half inch reach advantage. Despite any physical edge over the Brit, Cooper famously caught Ali with a left hook in the fourth round, dropping him to the canvas. Ali would later state that Cooper "hit me so hard my ancestors in Africa felt it." It was one of only four times in Muhammad Ali's career that he was ever knocked down in the ring, with one of those times regarded by boxing experts as a slip and not a true knockdown. This incredible Type 1 photo captures the moment Ali went down, with both fighters highlighted by the photographer's flash against the dark background. Crop markings have been applied to the borders of this photo in preparation for publication and can be seen at the top and bottom edges. Verso displays numerous handwritten notations throughout, with credit stamping from United Press International at the center. Includes full LOA from PSA/DNA.
