Weighing in at just 36 players the 1935 National Chicle football set is quite possibly the most important football set ever manufactured. With first-year cards of virtually every key subject in the set as well as the hobby"s most valuable and treasured card - the legendary #34 Bronko Nagurksi (also featured in this auction) the set continues to grow in popularity attracting both ardent football collectors and collectors of other sports dabbling in football for the first time.Featuring colorful art deco designs that were typical of the time the National Chicle football card artwork is similar to the other National Chicle cards of the day - the 1934-36 "Diamond Stars" baseball cards and also the 1933 "Sky Birds" cards. Despite being printed on heavy stock high-grade examples are difficult to find.Presented here is a gorgeous example of card #4 from the Chicle set a higher-grade copy of Pirates quarterback Ed Matesic. Known by some to be one of the set"s scarcities the Matesic cards are simply found in shorter supply than most of the other low-number cards in the set. Like many examples of the Matesic this one has centering issues but remains accurately graded. An excellent example of a difficult-to-obtain card from this tough set.Population DataPSA Population: 139 total graded 22 at this level 33 higherSGC Population: 37 total graded 3 at this level 6 higher
