1919 World Series Game 1 starters Eddie Cicotte and Dutch Ruether pose for photographers at Redland Field on October 1, 1919 in this remarkable Type 1 photo. Only mere moments after this image was captured Cicotte proceeded to drill Reds leadoff hitter Morrie Rath in the bottom of the first inning, signaling to conspirators that the "fix" was on and the Sox would play to lose. Unbeknownst to fans nationwide at the time, over the next two years the sport would be embroiled in one of the biggest scandals in American history when eight members of the White Sox were indicted and tried for accepting bribes from gamblers to intentionally lose the 1919 World Series. Photo exhibits considerable wrinkling throughout, though this is more apparent to verso than front, and the lower-left corner has fallen away. Despite any imperfections the central image presents wonderfully, with Cicotte and Ruether about ready to get underway. An affixed paper caption on verso reads "Just before the battle.
