Original 1919 portrait photograph of the notoriously corrupt "Prince Hal," Hal Chase. Chase appears during spring training with the Giants, prior to a season famously culminating with eight members of the Chicago White Sox conspiring to intentionally lose the World Series. Late in 1920 Chase was indicted by a grand jury investigating the Black Sox Scandal but never testified as he successfully avoided extradition. Nonetheless, during the Black Sox trial Giants pitcher Rube Benton testified that Chase had inside knowledge of the fix and secured over $40,000 through betting based on that information. While Chase was never formally banned by Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis his involvement in the scandal effectively ended Chase's career in organized baseball, relegating him to outlaw leagues for the next decade. A fantastic portrait of the star first baseman, the presented photo has been trimmed across the top edge. Verso includes full paper caption still affixed, which bears a date stamp of 03/28/19. Credit stamping from International appears at center of verso identifying them as the issuing service. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
