There are two different Germany Schaefer poses in the T206 set. One shows him in the middle of his throwing motion wearing a white Washington uniform, and this earlier offering depicts the infielder in his gray Detroit uniform, ready to field a ground ball. Schaefer's smile draws nearly as much attention as the beautiful colors where the sky meets the grass on the horizon behind him. Slight diamond cutting is present, with the centering just north and west on the canvas on this gorgeous example.

Sharp edges and a clean, bold back elevate the card. Soft corners are consistent with the grade. SGC has only ever graded 144 total examples of this Piedmont 150 back version of the Schaefer, with only eighteen receiving a higher grade than the VG-EX 4 offered here.

William Herman "Germany" Schaefer was known as both a baseball trickster and tactician. One of his most famous exploits was stealing first base, which was recalled by Detroit outfielder Davy Jones in Lawrence Ritter's The Glory of Their Times. With Schaefer on first base and another Detroit runner on third, the Tigers attempted double steal in which Schaefer ran for second, hoping to draw a throw from the catcher, allowing the runner on third to scamper home. The catcher did not throw down to second, so Schaefer stole first base in reverse, then attempted the double steal once more on the following pitch.
