We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #240, Rocky Colavito, graded MINT 9.
While Colavito led the league in plate appearances in 1963, it was a down year for the slugger, hitting only 22 home runs. It was the only season in a 10-year span (1957-1966) in which he hit less than 25 homers. His 1963 Topps card shows the focus Rocky had at the plate, as his eyes lock in on a subject in the distance. Fantastic edges and corners pair with great centering and bold colors to give this card tremendous eye appeal. Some incredibly faint staining in the top border, and nearly-but-not-quite perfect registration of the red circle inset are the only things keeping this card from grading at a 10.
You
won't find a nicer example of this card. And that isn't hyperbole. Not a
single example ever seen by PSA has received a higher grade than the
card offered here.
