We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #525, Nellie Fox, graded MINT 9.
1963 was Fox's final season in Chicago, and the final All-Star season in his Hall of Fame career. The 35-year-old finished 26th in MVP voting, helping the White Sox to a 94-68 record, 2nd place in the American League to the juggernaut Yankees.
Fox's 1963 Topps card shows the classic White Sox uniforms with red accent colors and the large uniform numbers on the sleeve. Four sharp corners and great edges, with centering just ever so slightly west on the canvas. Registration is nearly perfect, with only a slight printing error on the action shot in the red circle inset and some snow keeping this card from grading at a 10.
Only 1 example graded by PSA has ever received a higher grade than the MINT 9 offered here.
