We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #375, Ken Boyer, graded MINT 9.
1963 was Boyer's sixth consecutive season finishing Top-20 in MVP voting. He would finally break through in 1964, winning the award with 14 of 20 first place votes. 1963 also saw Boyer win his fifth career Gold Glove Award at third base. His card from that season is absolutely gorgeous, with the classic Cardinals uniform front and center, complemented perfectly by the bottom border and inset colors. Boyer's great smile with a beautiful sky blue background give the card immense eye appeal.
This example is nearly flawless. Perfect corners and borders. Great centering. Great colors and a clear image. But a minor registration issue with the red bottom border and yellow circle inset keep it from grading at a 10.
You
won't find a nicer example of this card. And that isn't hyperbole. Not a
single example ever seen by PSA has received a higher grade than the
card offered here.
