We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #442, Jim Piersal, graded MINT 9. Jimmy started 1963 with the Washington Senators, but played only 29 games with them before being traded to the Mets. He then only played 40 games with the Mets before being traded that same season to the Los Angeles Angels, where he finished the season with 20 games back in the American League. His 1963 Topps card depicts the eccentric center fielder as a member of the Senators with whom he hit his 99th career home run, running the bases regularly.
Sharp corners and nice edges on this beautifully centered card. Registration of the red bottom border and yellow circle inset are just slightly off, with some light color loss in the bottom right corner of that red border, common with this set.
Only 1 example graded by PSA has ever received a higher grade than the MINT 9 offered here.
