We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #297, Jim Golden, graded MINT 9.
Golden went 7-11 for Houston in 1962. He pitched in only 3 games for the club in 1963 before finishing his career in the Pacific Coast League in 1964. Thankfully, we were gifted this beautiful card before his time in the Major Leagues was over. One of the game's great uniforms and most unique hats is on full display here, as the pitcher has both hands above his head at the top of his windup with a cloudy blue sky behind him.
Centering is just east on the canvas, but corners and edges are great. Registration is nearly perfect, with only some light snow keeping this card from grading even higher than it already has.
You won't find a nicer example of this card. And that isn't hyperbole. Not a single example ever seen by PSA has received a higher grade than the card offered here.
