We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #307, Chet Nichols, graded MINT 9.
Chet Nichols won the ERA title as a rookie for the Boston Braves in 1951. He lost the next two years of his career to military service, and when he came back in 1954, he was never quite able to recapture that magic. 1963 was his final full season in the Major Leagues, going 1-3 in 21 games for the Red Sox.
Slight diamond cutting is the only imperfection in an otherwise perfect border with four sharp corners and edges. A minor registration issue with the green bottom border and red circle inset keep the card from grading even higher than it already has.
Only 1 example graded by PSA has ever received a higher grade than the MINT 9 offered here.
