We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #353, Billy Williams, graded NM-MT 8.
Billy Williams hit 25 of his 426 career home runs in 1963, but the Cubs went 82-80 and finished 7th in the National League. Unfortunately, a common result for the team during the Hall of Famer's 16 years in Chicago. His 1963 Topps issue features a portrait of the young slugger looking up at the camera, eager to get on the field. Great borders and the top two corners are sharp, but the bottom two fall victim to the green bottom border issues many face in this set, with slight color loss and softness. Its registration is slightly off, as well, explaining why the card's technical grade isn't even higher than it already is.
Only 9 examples graded by PSA have ever received a higher grade than the NM-MT 8 offered here.
