We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #125, Robin Roberts, graded
NM-MT 8. Roberts entered the 1963 season 56 wins shy of the magical 300 mark for his career. A disappointing 1-10 season in 1961 derailed his chances from making it, but he tried his best to get back on track, going 14-13 in 1963. Ultimately, he fell 14 short, but was still inducted into the Hall of Fame. This card has some light staining in the upper right corner, and some minor edge chipping in the green bottom border, but is otherwise a gorgeous example.
Only 4 examples graded by PSA have ever received a higher grade than the NM-MT 8 offered here.
