We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #412, Dodgers' Big Three, graded NM-MT 8.
The Los Angeles Dodgers starting rotation was to be feared in the first half of the 1960s, culminating in possibly the most dominating staff of all time in 1966. Their Big Three in 1963 was Johnny Podres, Don Drysdale, and Sandy Koufax, who went a combined 58-34 during the regular season. Koufax accounted for 25 of those wins and only 5 of those losses en route to winning the pitching Triple Crown, the Cy Young Award, and the MVP Award. The Dodgers went on to win the World Series in 1963 by sweeping the New York Yankees, who appeared in 8 of the 9 World Series from 1955 to 1963, winning four of them.
This card immortalizes the legendary staff. Four sharp corners and great edges. Centering is just slightly west on the canvas. A minor print registration issue with the bottom green border and some fisheyes in that area keep the card from grading even higher than it already has.
Only 21 of the nearly 1,300 examples graded by PSA have ever received a higher grade than the NM-MT 8 offered here.
