We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #162, Minnesota Twins, graded NM-MT 8. In only their third season in Minnesota, Bob Allison and Harmon Killebrew led the Twins to a 3rd place finish in the American League. Killebrew led the Major Leagues with 45 home runs and finished 4th in the MVP voting despite missing 20 games throughout the season due to a nagging knee injury he would have surgically repaired in the off season. This card features the
Twins 1963 team picture against an orange and blue background. A minor registration issue with the red circle inset and some light edge chipping along the blue border keep this card from grading higher than it already has.
Only 6 examples graded by PSA have ever received a higher grade than the NM-MT 8 offered here.
