We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #544, 1963 Rookie Stars, graded NM-MT 8.
The four players featured are Houston's Rusty Staub, St. Louis' Duke Carmel, Washington's Dick Phillips, and Bill Haas of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Staub would go on to be a 6-time All Star, finishing in the Top-25 of MVP voting 6 times in his career.
This card has great edges and bold, bright colors. The corners are sharp, but the top two in the blue top border are touched with the light color loss in those colorful borders which afflicts so much of the set. Great centering with consistent borders give the card tremendous eye appeal, despite some light snow in spots.
Only 17 of the more than 800 examples graded by PSA have ever received a higher grade than the NM-MT 8 offered here.
