The American Caramel E90-1 issue is sometimes referred to as the T206
of
caramel issues, and has been dubbed "The Kraken" in some quarters due
to the challenges of collecting the 120 subjects found within. The set
was issued with a
stick of caramel that, as one might imagine, led to condition issues
which plague the set. This gorgeous example exhibits some light staining
on the front, particularly near the bottom right.
This is an exceptional image of "Big Six" winding up to deliver a pitch. Inexplicably, his last name is misspelled on the card, an error which went uncorrected. The Mathewson is easily one of the best looking E90-1's in terms of design and composition, and while the visual appeal is strong, the card is accurately
graded, as it does exhibit rounded corners and some creasing around Matty's eyes and chest.
Mathewson won 37 games and led the league in ERA+ in 1908, something he did five times in the six seasons from 1908 to 1913. This 1909 issue came out in the middle of the most dominant stretch of his Hall of Fame career which ended with 373 wins, two pitching Triple Crowns, and a plaque in Cooperstown.
