A fine fielder with a light bat, Tom Carey was known as "Scoops" as a young sandlot player and ended up with the Browns in 1935 before a trade to the Red Sox in December of 1938. A tough signature due to his early demise in 1970, he's signed his 1939 Play Ball card in black ink with a bit of panache and it's a beauty.  PSA/DNA Authentic is the grade, his geometric slashes are the takeaway.  The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail. The card is one of several dated on the reverse July 5, 1939.  July 5 was a getaway day for the visiting Red Sox, who defeated the Athletics 6-4, while Carey watched from the bench.
