Extremely underrated card of Walter Johnson from a set of more than 175 subjects from a variety of sports, these cards were produced for Spalding by the Sports Co. of America and were part of a retail promotion that enabled young collectors to win prizes or receive discounts on sporting goods. Graded GOOD 2 by SGC, this card of Walter Johnson does exhibit some wear, yet is bright and attractive, most of the wear related to corners or overall soiling. Cards from this issue have not escalated in price the way other photographic issues from the 1920s have, though the cards are considerably more scarce (just 8 examples of the Walter Johnson have been graded by SGC). As collectors discover the difficulty of obtaining these cards, they are likely to grow in value.
