Syl Johnson had an impressive nineteen year career in the majors, playing on four World Series squads with the Cardinals. A swingman for his entire career, he appeared in 542 games, winning 209 and finishing 206, about as even-Steven as you can get. He was near the end of his career with the Phillies in 1939 when Play Ball snapped him in a nice warmup pose.  Johnson has signed neatly in blue ballpoint, an autograph deemed Authentic by PSA/DNA and with his last name impressed a tad darker than his first.  Some paper remnants from long-ago scrapbook removal are visible at the card reverse.  The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail.
