Though catcher Mickey Owen is easily best remembered for the dropped third strike that sparked a four run Yankee rally in Game Four of the 1941 World Series, he was also part of an interesting drama that caused him to miss five seasons.  In early 1946, Owen signed a contract with the Veracruz Blues of the Mexican league, along with 17 other major leaguers who jumped. All 18 were suspended for five seasons, and while Owen quickly fell out of favor in Mexico and applied for reinstatement, his application was denied.  He was reinstated in 1949, but missed four seasons of his prime.  His signature here has been graded MINT 9 by PSA/DNA, the card exhibiting some paper remnants on the reverse, the product of long-ago scrapbook removal. The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail.
