Nicknamed "Indian Bob" due to some Native American lineage, Bob Johnson was the replacement for Hall of Famer Al Simmons, part of Connie Mack's fire sale to keep the Philadelphia Athletics afloat during the Great Depression.  Johnson spent most of his career with Philadelphia, an eight-time All Star who is significantly underrated among collectors today.  Johnson drove in 100 runs for six consecutive seasons and hit 288 lifetime homers, finishing his career with a lifetime batting average just under .300.  The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail.
