For its 1973 issue, Topps produced what is perhaps the most drab set of cards until that point, wrapping occasionally odd photography around a white border, text printed in block letters along the bottom.  The set is significant due to its excellent selection of Hall of Famers and stars, the rookie card of Mike Schmidt, and the fact that it was the last year that Topps produced cards in series - beginning in 1974, Topps began issuing cards all in one series.  For this reason, many collectors consider 1973 the final year of "vintage."

The set grades approximately 2% NM, 16% EX/MT, 36% EX, 32% VG/EX, 13% VG, and a few lesser.  The cards are largely clean, the chief condition flaws related either to light handling (i.e. corner softness) or to the typical Topps quality control problems resulting in centering issues and print flaws.  Key cards grade as follows: #1 HR Leaders (G), #50 Clemente (VG/EX), #90 B. Robinson (VG/EX), #100 Aaron (VG), #130 Rose (EX), #160 Palmer (VG/EX), #170 Killebrew (VG/EX), #174 Gossage (VG/EX), #175 F. Robinson (VG), #190 Gibson (VG), #193 Fisk (VG), #220 Ryan (VG), #230 Morgan (VG/EX), 235 Hunter (VG), #245 Yastrzemski (VG), #255 Jackson (EX), #300 Carlton (VG), #305 Mays (EX), #320 Brock (VG/EX), #350 Seaver (VG/EX), #370 Stargell (EX), #380 Bench (EX), #480 Marichal (EX), 615 Schmidt (VG/EX).  660 cards total.
